Figurative Language and Music – Idioms

Idioms are where a word or phrase means something different from the meanding of its individual words.

Musicians use idioms often along with methapors and similies to make their point in short statements or to assist with matching words to rhythms.  It can also help with rhymes to make phrases work.

Today we are going to work with idioms.  Please watch the following with Mr. Quinn in small groups:  Tim and Moby discuss “Letting the cat out of the bag”.

Figurative Language and Music

Idiom, Metaphor, Similie.  All these terms that we learn in language arts.  Whats the big deal?  I mean who really talks like that anyway?

The truth is that musicians use figurative language all the time to help make their point in lyrics of their songs.  I bet you know much more about figurative language than you think you do.  As you reach the end of the lesson, you are going to show it by writing your own song and then produce it!

To get started, listen to this rap on figurative language and then move on with the lesson.  Click here to launch the rap, remember to plug in your headphones!

Primer to Getting Started with the Staff in Music

Today we are going to take a look at duration in our music lesson.

Duration = Time something lasts

We are going to look at how musicians communicate how long sounds last when playing instruments. During today’s lesson, you will learn to communicate with symbols that are used in writing music. These symbols are used to create rhythms.

Rhythms = Stringing sounds together to create patterns.
We will look at writing down rhythms and then performing them. Then we will work in reverse; we will look at creating rhythm patterns on a drum machine and work toward writing them down.

If you have finished reading to this point, bring your eyes to the front of the room now.
