We have been working to review figurative language over the last several sessions.

The new figurative language website is now ready for your to explore.  This week, we will explore the use figurative language in modern music and learn how song writers use these tools to create the meaning in their songs.

Students were told that headphones would be used this week.  This is a reminder that you will really want to have your headphones with you to work on this lesson.

Idioms are where a word or phrase means something different from the meanding of its individual words.

Musicians use idioms often along with methapors and similies to make their point in short statements or to assist with matching words to rhythms.  It can also help with rhymes to make phrases work.

Today we are going to work with idioms.  Please watch the following with Mr. Quinn in small groups:  Tim and Moby discuss “Letting the cat out of the bag”.

Idiom, Metaphor, Similie.  All these terms that we learn in language arts.  Whats the big deal?  I mean who really talks like that anyway?

The truth is that musicians use figurative language all the time to help make their point in lyrics of their songs.  I bet you know much more about figurative language than you think you do.  As you reach the end of the lesson, you are going to show it by writing your own song and then produce it!
