What is a metaphor and why do
we need them anyway?

Poetry and songwriting are often compared together because they use
some of the same language arts skills. The Metaphor is one of the
strongest tools a songwriter has to communicate with the listener.
Metaphors are language that directly compares seemingly unrelated
subjects.
Lets take a look at what a metaphor is and what it does in poetry.
Now that you understand what a metaphor does, lets look at a worksheet
to and explore how it works.
Please print a copy of the worksheet 1 listed below, Only do
worksheet 2 if Mr. Quinn asks you to do it. Collect it from the
printer and work on it back at your desk:

Lets take a look at how song writers use metaphor to write better lyrics for
a song. Metaphors are not easy to create and good ones are really
hard to come up with. Learning to create them is really important to
making good song lyrics.
Please take a moment to read a section from a book by Pat Pattison, a
professional song writer who teachers at the Berkley College of Music.
