Dear Parent or Guardian:

Starting this week, students will be working on a project that
will expose them to the art of songwriting.  The goal of this
unit is to give a real world application skills learned in their
language arts classes in conjunction with their music class.
Topics covered will include rhyming words, metaphor, simile,
descriptive and persuasive writing.

Students will be exposed to the lyrics  and subject matter of
the following songs and artists:

Beatles - Yesterday
Eagles – Desperado
Public Enemy – Fight the Power
Rush – Limelight
Stevie Wonder  -  I Wish
Billy Joel - We Did’nt Start the Fire
Weird Al Yankovic – Frank’s 2000”  TV
Will Smith – Wild Wild West – Theme from the motion picture,
Wild Wild West

I have posted links to the lyrics to each of these songs on my
website at www.markquinn.net.  Language and subject matter
have been kept to appropriate topics acceptable in the
classroom.

Students will also be exposed to the digital audio recording
software,
Audacity.   This program can be downloaded from
the Internet and is license free at the following website:
http:
//audacity.sourceforge.net/ .  There is no charge for this
software and students are not breaking any laws in
downloading this and installing it for their use at home.

If for any reason you object to your child being exposed to
this material, please sign the bottom of this letter and
include a phone number for me to reach you so that I can
address your concern.  If this letter is not returned to me, it
will be assumed that your child can participate in the project.

Sincerely,
Mr. Quinn
Music Teacher
